Maxwell's Cafe Bar is a busy cafe bar with lots of outdoor seating, an upstairs terrace and close to the train and bus stations and long stay car park, so in a great location in the town centre.
We visited for dinner on a quiet Friday evening, prior to Lancashire going into Tier 3 lockdown and it was very quiet, I worry how places are going to survive.
We sat on the raised area with views of the train station and perused the vegan menu, which has some new dishes and clear allergen information labelling.
I researched the wine list prior to our visit and found lots of vegan friendly wines, but what a shame they do not label these, would make life so much easier. I chose a bottle of Les Chiens Catalans Blanc, a lovely crisp fruity wine and I especially liked the label, made me smile.
We shared nachos and black olives to start, I would have struggled to eat the nachos on my own, as it was a substantial portion so good value for money. The nachos were as good as you get, the cheese was perfectly melted, with a delicious tomato salsa and creamy guacamole, we loved them.
I would not normally order a mushroom burger, as I think its a bit of a cop out, but decided to give it a go and Steven ordered Bang Bang penne.
The burger was absolutely scrumptious on a soft brioche bun, with plenty pesto and cheese, served with crisp fries and mayo. Steven loved the spiciness of his pasta dish, it was a good sized portion, in a creamy sriracha sauce, with extra sriracha drizzled over the top.
On a previous visit we went for breakfast and sat outside and I ordered avocado and tomato salsa on wholemeal toast, with a full breakfast for Steven and two large decaf Americanos.
The food was delicious, although Steven realised the baked beans were missing off his breakfast after he had eaten it and we were puzzled they serve dry toast, when vegan margarine is easily available in every supermarket. We enjoyed the decaf Americano coffees so much, we ordered a second one whilst watching the world go by, as Maxwell's is in a great spot for people watching.
I think Maxwell's are offering a good selection of vegan options and I will definitely revisit when next in Clitheroe.
