Wholesome Junkies are a vegan street food vendor, who pop up all over Manchester, offering their healthy vegan junk food and I have been drooling over their signature dish, the KFC burger (Kentucky Fried Cauliflower) for months. I have been unable to attend some of their events at Media City or their supper club at The Runaway brewery, so I had today pencilled on my calendar, ever since I saw their name on Grub's flyer.
Owner Chelsea certainly cooks up a storm, as I keep seeing her food photos on social media, so I contacted her to ask if the KFC was soya free. Unfortunately it contains soya milk, but she kindly offered to make a special version for me cooked in a separate fryer. The menu on the day looked pretty awesome too, I mean what would you pick?
I was immediately impressed with the use of wooden cutlery and paper trays, not a bit of plastic in sight and as you can see, the food was a big success too.
When I look forward to something, like the KFC burger, my expectations are high, but I can honestly say it exceeded them by a mile. The cauliflower was absolutely delicious and with all the extras like cheese, garlic mayo, sriracha sauce and onion rings, it was a marriage made in heaven. In addition I ordered a side of paprika seasoned fries, which totally blew me away, the best fries ever and that is saying something.
Chelsea not only made a separate soya free batter for the KFC, but a special mayo just for me, I mean that is attention to detail. I was hoping to have a chat with her, but she was mowed out with customers, from when we got there, until we left, pretty much says it all.
If you visit Manchester and you spot Wholesome Junkies anywhere, get on down you will love it, I certainly did. Highly recommended.
